A Blanket Dilemma

Dilemma might be too strong a word for this, but it has got me in a bit of a muddle this evening. The plan was to finish the hexagon I was in the middle of, join it to the blanket-in-progress, and then make a quick cover for my camera and write a post about that, not this!

Anyway, this seems more pressing, so... as I was joining said hexagon to the blanket-in-progress I noticed it didn't quite match up. Not sure if it is completely clear from the above photo, but I crocheted 7 corners onto my hexagon!

Now after taking a few minutes to work this out I confront my first dilemma (not really a dilemma in retrospect, just me being lazy) - Do I carry on regardless? or do I unravel back to the mistake and redo? After briefly telling myself off for being lazy, I decide to do the latter and go and make a cup of tea resolving to redo the hexagon in question when I get back.

I come back and look at the blanket-in-progress again. Something is not right and it isn't just the hexagon with 7 corners. This is the dilemma.

I have some yellow yarn that I bought to be included in the blanket, but I haven't included it as it didn't seem to sit right with the rest of the colours. In fact, for the past couple of weeks I've had it in my mind that this blanket is heading in more of a 'blue' direction and, next trip into town, I'd pick up a bit more yarn to fit. Now I'm not so sure. Maybe the yellow does fit and the darker blue/green ('Teal' apparently) is the colour that doesn't. Only one thing to do...

...take off the 7 cornered hexagon in teal and replace with a 6 cornered one in yellow. It feels better, doesn't it? Lighter and brighter, the darker teal is too heavy I think, but is there still something missing, another colour needed maybe, or do I carry on like this?

I'm still not entirely certain, but definitely happier with it... I think. Anyway, one positive is, had I not been 'joining as you go' this might have only come to light after joining a massive stack of hexagons!

I will come back to the blanket later - staring at something for too long never helps. I'm going to have a look around Handmade Monday instead for inspiration.

xx

  1. i think that this will turn out to be a beautiful blanket! i really love the hexagon panels and all the colours you've chosen are gorgeous. At the risk of confusing your further i have to say that i like the teal... and given the choice i think i prefer it to the yellow! Monitors do weird things to colours though, so i may not be seeing it 'true'.

Following your instincts seems the best way to go! x

    1. Thank you. I like the teal this morning too! The yellow is slightly lighter than in the photos - the light was fading fast as I took the last few! x

  2. I like the teal too but again maybe the colours aren't quite right as your yellow looks orange to me! Maybe another red would be good? Anyway it's going to be a good colourful blanket when it's finished! x

    1. Thank you. The yellow does look a little darker than it actually is - the light wasn't great when I took the photos. I think more yarn would help (there isn't much that more yarn doesn't solve!) and I might be able to bridge the gap between the teal and the lighter colours. x

  3. It's really a lovely blanket and I love the colors you have chosen. I too had a big problem joining my hexagon motifs I crocheted. I finally gave up and they are sitting in the closet. I'm sure this blanket will be finished soon and admired. Have a wonderful week :)

    1. Thank you. This is the first time I've tried joining the motifs 'as you go' and I find it much easier. I also have another hexagon blanket, unfinished in a box somewhere because I got fed up joining the shapes together! x

  4. Do you know what? It's really refreshing when someone posts about a project that has not just gone smoothly. I think we're all guilty of posting too many wonderfully-crafted end-products without mentioning the troubles that have gone on on the way! x

  5. Thanks Emma, I quite agree! Finished things are lovely, but it is partly the process of creating them that makes them so. x

  6. Its always best to put a puzzle away and come back with fresh eyes. Glad I'm not the only one that scratches my head with mistakes and colours!

  7. I sometimes wonder if we think too hard about these things. If/when your blanket gets bigger I wonder if the colours will matter that much?

    1. Very wise words. I always over-think things and because a blanket takes time there is so much more scope to do so!

  9. I think the teal hexagon looks nice as a highlight colour every so often in your blanket. Too much of it might be over-powering but go with what your heart and eye tells you. I like the way you've started joining them up already - I've always found it motivating to have something slightly different to do (crochet, then join) then I don't get so bored (although in my case its sew then join)

    1. Thank you. I think if I didn't join them as I go I probably would never get round to it (and I don't have space for yet another unfinished project!).

  10. This yellow definitely has its place in the blanket: it works very well especially with this almond green and darker pink. The teal (one of my darling colours by the way) may look a bit too heavy but all in all it could had a nice accent in the finished blanket. Also: I didn't even know one could crochet hexagon, this is a whole new world opening in front of me!

    1. Awww I love it both ways! It's really hard when putting colours together sometimes! I think keep the teal hexagon at the other end and the yellow where it is. Good luck with finishing it :-) Simmi x
